Don't break the Chain

Objective 

With the technique of Don't Break the Chain, that talks about how to change one bad habit or even create a new one, by accomplishing the same goal/activity every day, I want to change my bad habit of waste time on social media and watching series, and be more disciplined and productive. Setting a goal and following this method, I'm looking for success.


Reflective

The reason why this method can be succesful, as Adegbuyi (2020) write, is because "It activates your brain's reward system releasing dopamine" (para. 13). By the time we mark the X in the calendar day by day, our brain releases dopamina, the hormone that makes us feel good. If we found one activity satistaying, is more likely that we are going to continuing doing it.

Another interesting reason is that is more easily to reach a goal if you can see it clearly. Researches discovered that the swimmers swim faster when they are going toward the goal and when they can see it clearly. We can apply this to our method with what Tank (2019) said "It's because when we can visualize a goal we put more effort to reach that goal. Similary, when we perceive progress toward a goal, we are more likely to complete the goal, and faster." (para. 12).  

Every time you add an X into the calendar, you can see a clear and achievable your goal, you can realize day by day that you are approaching to complete what you wanted to accomplish. This motivates you and guides you to your objective. Like this, you can succesfully change or create a new habit.


Interpretive

I think the results of this method will improve my way of being more disciplined and productive. I spent too much time checking Facebook, watching movies and series. Most of the time I end up rushing for finish projects or activities I had to do with more time, and some times I even end up the day without doing anything and skiping the task. I am aware that I am wasting time I could spend better just because I am not disciplined enough. 


Decisional

Setting an specific goal, in this case spend less time on social media and watching series, will improve my self discipline. I can establish how much time I will spend checking my phone, how many episodes I am going to watch per day, and establish an schedule for all the tasks I need to complete day by day. I will put a set of alarms and remainders on my phone, so I will know exactly when to start and stop doing an activity. At the final of the day, I will mark in the calendar an X if I completed all the tasks and followed the schedule right, so I could see that I am doing a good job.
